Piazza Navona In Rome
Rome is filled with beauty and marvels and Piazza Navona is no exception. It offers an amazing gathering place with beautiful lights and sculptures. Its exceptionally long shape gives it a unique atmosphere and offers a piece of history at the same time. The buildings of the Piazza currently lie over the remains of the Circus Domitianus or Domitians Stadium. Romans would gather here to watch the agones games. Specifically noting the length the piazza stands in the area that was used for races in the stadium. In the late 15th century the city market was moved to Rome from Campidoglio defined as a square and is now the pride of Baroque Rome.
Beautiful fountains are common landmarks found in Rome and the piazza has three stunning ones to enjoy. La Fontana dei Fiumi marks the center of the piazza. One of Berninis most spectacular fountains it was built in 1651. The center contains a rocky structure that features an obelisk designed with the Egyptian form. Four giant statues surround the structure each one designed by Bernini and created by one of his pupils. The statues consisting of the Nile the Danube the Ganges and the Rio della Plata each represent one of the four quarters of the world. Their beauty and lifelike qualities make them a true masterpiece. In the northern end you will find the beautiful fontana di Nettuno by Giacomo della Porta with statues of Neptune and the Nereids. The third fountain fontana del Moro is located at the southern end of the piazza. This fountain was also designed by Bernini with a statue depicting a Moor fighting with a dolphin.
As you look to the west you will marvel at the church of SantAngese in Agone. Commissioned by Pope Innocent X in 1652 this church adds a wealth of beauty to the square. The spectacular dome the twin belltowers and the concave faade were all designs of Francesco Borromini. They represent the rivalry between the two artists Borromini and Bernini.
Today you will continue to find Piazza Navona a busy place with plenty of entertainment cafes and unique artists. At Christmas time the piazza is filled with stalls selling all sizes and forms for cribs a popular collection item. It is also said that the ancient city got its name Lalitpattan after the Lalitadhara forest was cleared by king Biradava. It must be remembered that the name of Patan used by Newars in Yala. It is said that King Yalamber named this city after himself. Before Malla Dynasty ascended the throne in 1480 the Muslim Emperor Sam Suddin Iliyas destroyed the temples and monuments of Patan. When King Siddhi Nar Singh Malla ascended the throne in 1618 he started to rebuild the city and Shrinivas and Yog Narendra Malla made further contributions to it. These days one can see the beautiful palace complex and squares built during the Malla period.
